DOM, or Drawn Over Mandrel tubing is created through a specific manufacturing process. It begins with a coil of strip steel that is formed into a tube and welded. It is a welding method used to create high-quality steel tubes through electric resistance. DOM is created by cold drawing the welded tube over a mandrel, which enhances their dimensional accuracy and strength. DOM is known for its uniform wall thickness, smooth surface finish, and excellent mechanical properties. They are commonly used in applications like hydraulic cylinders, automotive components, and construction equipment due to their durability and precision.
Electric resistance welding, or ERW, uses pressure and heat generated by high-frequency electrical currents to create a forged weld. ERW is the first step of creating DOM tubing. The flash is removed prior to cold drawing.
The DOM tubing we sell is made from 1020 or 1026 Steel and meets ASTM A513 Type 5. Other grades may be available upon request. Diameters range from 0.375” OD up to 8.25” OD and 0.049” wall thickness up to 0.500”.
Hydraulic Steel Tube is welded or seamless low-carbon steel tubing annealed for bending and flaring with many uses.
Used for pressure lines in applications requiring high-quality tubing for bending, flaring, forming, and brazing. Typical uses include Heavy Equipment, Agriculture, Off-Road Vehicles, Automotive, Steering and Transmission components, Process and Utility, and other Hydraulic applications.
Common types we supply are SAE J525, J526, J356 & J524 (seamless)
J525 is often dual certified to ASTM A214 (but it is produced to an average wall versus a minimum wall called out in A214).
J524 is often dual certified to ASTM A179 (a common boiler grade tube that is not drawn).
Hydraulic tubing is made from low-carbon steel, typically 1006 to 1018 steel.
Welded diameters range from 0.250” to 2.50” and wall thickness range from 0.028" to 0.120”. Seamless diameters range from 0.125” to 1.50” and wall thicknesses range from 0.028” to 0.120”. Feel free to inquire about sizes outside of these ranges.
